Finding Music Scores & Recordings

Go to Morris Library’s Home Page:

NOTE: When searching I-Share, you have the option to search just SIUC or all of I-Share. This option can be changed in the drop-down menu to the right of the search screen.

In the middle of the screen, click on the word “Books and More.” Then click on the link “Search I-Share @ Morris Library.” This will take you directly to the main search screen.

There are two ways to search for music materials in I-Share – by uniform title and by keyword.

The best way to determine whether we have a musical work in I-Share is to find what is called the “Uniform Title.”

A uniform title combines all recordings and scores of the same work together under the same, EXACT title. For example, we have 4 scores and 4 CDs of Beethoven’s 9th symphony, also called the Choral symphony. The titles of the scores are “Symphonie Nr. 9,” “Symphony 9,” “Symphony IX,” and “Choral finale.”

If you simply did a title search for “Beethoven’s 9th symphony” or “symphony no. 9,” you wouldn’t retrieve any of these scores.

If you click on any of these titles (shown above) and click on the “More Details” tab, you will see the “Uniform Title.”

By clicking on the last portion of the Uniform Title, you will see all of the scores and recordings of Beethoven’s 9th symphony.

Another option for finding music materials in I-Share is to use keyword searching through the “Advanced Search” option. From the main I-Share search window, under the search window, click on “Advanced Search.”

Here is an example:
Change the first drop down window to “Author” and enter “Bach” in the search window. Change the second drop down window to “Keyword” and enter “well tempered clavier” in the search window.

Scroll down to the options for Format. Select either “Music Recording” or “Music Score.” At the bottom of the page, make sure that the window at the bottom left says “SIUC only” then click on the “Find” button.

If you limit your search to sound recordings, you will retrieve 13 titles. From here, you can follow the previous instructions for finding the Uniform Title and searching for that title.

When you do, you will retrieve 18 entries. Five items have the Uniform Title but do not have the English words in the catalog information.

In addition to using the Advanced Search to limit your search to a particular type of format, you can also limit after you have executed a search.

Example: In the search box at the top of the I-Share screen, enter “cats,” change the next window to “Title,” and change the next window to “SIUC only.” Click on Find. Your search will retrieve over 1000 items. At the right of the screen, under “Narrow Your Search,” is a list of Formats. Not all appear. Click on “More” underneath Microform.

Two of the additional Format options are “Music Score” and “Music Recording.” Click on either one to limit your search.

There are additional ways to narrow your search: Location (at SIUC), Author, Topic, Subject Area, Language, Genre, Era, Region, and Title. Try limiting your search to items with the author Andrew Lloyd Webber.
