Customer Information in Databases & Online Resources

  • American Fact Finder
    Provides tables of information about demographics, income, housing information for the country, states, counties, and cities. Larger communities (e.g. counties and major cities) include the American Community Survey data from the last few years. Smaller communities only include the most recent decennial census data.
  • Consumer Expenditure Survey
    Source of the Data for "Household Spending: Who Spends How Much on What," the Consumer Expenditure Survey is conducted annually by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This Web site includes tables that break down spending by things like age and race and reports summarizing spending in some areas.
  • Nielsen MyBestSegments
    Discover the top consumer segments that live in your ZIP Code and uncover a brief snapshot about each segment's demographic and lifestyle characteristics.
  • Reference USA  
    Contains data on consumer and lifestyle preferences. Allows you to build custom lists of consumers based on a large number of demographic, geographic, and marketing categories.
  • Statistical Abstract of the United States
    This resource, known for its comprehensive and authoritative summary of statistics of the United States, has an added value found with its charts and graphs. Each chart and graph cites the source of its data – usually a web site. Visit the web site if you are searching for more current or updated data.

Customer Information in Circulating Library Books

Many of Morris Library's books based on national data are in the circulating collection, and you can take them out of the library. It's worth checking to see if you can get a specialized book related to a specific product or service, e.g. Who's Buying at Restaurants and Carry Out, by searching in the catalog for books about that product or service. You also can use some of the subject headings below to find information about consumers. Be sure to pay attention to the year of publication.
