John Dewey: Resources

The personal papers of John Dewey are housed at the Special Collections Research Center. The correspondence in the collection is already published in the critical edition. Unpublished items include manuscripts, personal effects, audio tapes, and motion-picture tapes.

The digital collection covers all 1,634 photographs from two archival collections at the Special Collections Research Center: the John Dewey Photograph Collection (PH 47) and the John Dewey School at the University of Chicago Collection (PH 46).

The 1,603 volumes of Dewey's personal library are held in the rare books of the Special Collections Research Center. The books are cataloged in Morris Library's general catalog. The bibliography, Jo Ann Boydston, John Dewey's Personal and Professional Library (SIU Press, 1982), lists each book.

The research center is located on the lower level of Morris Library and operated by the School of History and Philosophy. It was initiated in 1961 and has served as the flagship Dewey center collaborating with several others around the globe. Its activities include publishing critical editions, gathering secondary research materials, assisting scholars, and promoting Dewey and his ideas to diverse audiences.
