Local procedures for all areas of Information Resources Management (IRM), SIUC Library Affairs

"Shelved As" Procedure

Procedure for shelving journals with "generic" titles

(June 2009)

The following procedures refer only to generic titles that are publications of an organization.

When determining the "shelved as" title for a journal, the 130 (uniform title) field or the 245 (title) field will be used.

A journal title that begins with one of the following words or phrases will not be shelved by title. This list is not exclusive and may be expanded as needed.

  • Bulletin of ...
  • Journal of ...
  • Newsletter of ...
  • Proceedings of ...
  • Transactions of ...

The Senior Library Specialist in Acquisitions, in consultation with the Special Formats Cataloger, will determine under what name the title will be shelved. This will usually be the name of an organization. For example:

  • Journal of the American Ceramic Society = SHELVED AS American Ceramic Society. Journal

"Shelved as" notes will be inserted in the holdings record in the 852 field, subfield z.
