EndNote 2025: Find Full Text

Finding Full Text (PDFs)

You can use EndNote to find full text articles and import them into your library as attachments to citations. 

1. To enable imports, select Edit > Preferences > Find Full Text.

2. Select all options: Web of Science, Digital Object Identifier (DOI), PubMed, and Open URL.

3. For the OpenURL Path, enter: sic.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/openurl/01CARLI_SIC/01CARLI_SIC:CARLI_SIC? 

4. For the URL, enter: https://proxy.lib.siu.edu/login?url=

5. Click on option  to "Automatically invoke Find Full Text on newly-imported references."

6. Select OK to apply changes. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

7. You can also manually select a reference without full-text from your library to search for the PDF. 

8. Select References > Find full text > Find full text

If a PDF is attached to a citation, a paperclip icon will appear to the left of the reference . 

Manually Add Full Text

You can manually attach a PDF from a file to your EndNote. 

1. Open  the EndNote reference to which you will attach the PDF.

3. Under the Summary tab, select +Attach file.

4. Choose a file from your computer and select Open.

You can also drag and drop files from your computer or your downloads folder directly into EndNote desktop and drop them on the target citation.

Read and Annotate PDFs

Read and annotate articles within EndNote by adding sticky notes and highlighting. Colleagues sharing folders can see others' annotations when the libraries are synced.

1. Select a reference.

3. From this window, on the upper left, click on the text box icon to the right of the magnifying glass. Four options will open:add a "Sticky Note," highlight text, markup text by underlining, and strikethrough text. Close annotation options by clicking the X on the right.

4. If you need to add more text than will fit on a sticky note, open a reference and under Edit scroll down to the Notes or Research Notes sections. Add notes here and save. Collaborators will be able to view these notes.
