SIU Open Access Policy: How to Comply

This guide contains information about the SIU Open Access Policy for Faculty Scholarship and instructions on how to comply.

The SIU Open Access policy specifies that articles must be submitted to the repository, OpenSIUC, within thirty days of publication.  Articles can be submitted directly by the author or by an individual designated by the department.

Authorization Form

If a departmental designate will be submitting one or more articles for you to OpenSIUC, you will need to fill out a one-time authorization form.  This form will suffice to cover your acceptance of the Open Access Policy for all subsequent articles governed by the policy.  The signed authorization form should be sent to

If you are submitting your article(s) directly to OpenSIUC, an authorization form is not necessary.  You will be required to accept the identical language via a click-through agreement at the time of submission.

Submitting to OpenSIUC

You will need an OpenSIUC account in order to submit your article(s).

Step 1.  Create an account.

Go to and click “My Account” in the upper right corner.  Then click the Sign Up button under Create new account.  Fill out the form and select a password, then click the Sign Up button.  You will receive an email with a link, and once you click the link, your account will be created.

Step 2.  Submit an article

Log in to your account from the “My Account” link on the repository homepage.  Click the “Collections” link under the Browse menu on the left side of the screen, find your department and then the department’s series for articles.

Click “Submit Research” on the lower left of the screen.

Fill out the form, attaching the post-peer-reviewed final article.  This is the last document that you send to the publisher after the peer review process has been completed, but before the publisher’s copyediting or formatting.  However, some publishers allow authors to deposit the publisher’s copyedited and formatted pdf version of the article; when this is the case, authors are encouraged to deposit that version.

Click Submit button.

Once your submission has been received, it will be reviewed and if approved, posted to OpenSIUC.
